Art courses for all

The Phoenix Studio runs a range of art courses in many mediums for all ages and abilities.

At the Phoenix Studio you’ll find a great range of art and craft courses to help you learn a new skill, develop your ideas and be creative! There’s a place here for every artist – absolute beginner or seasoned practitioner, adults and children, and we especially like people who think they have no talent but long to have a go. Classes take place in our light and airy purpose-built studio, which overlooks the wildflower meadow.

We offer all kinds of art making and shaping classes and workshops like oil painting, portrait painting, ceramic life modelling, drawing and printmaking. There are regular yoga classes too and wild art workshops. When you visit you may find a mosaic being pieced together, a wishing stone in the raku kiln, or ceramic animals evolving. Click on the links for more information about all our courses including prices and how to book, and come and see us soon.

I'm hooked!

I've always painted and thought I would be hopeless at sculpture.

Surrounded by some great clay modelling pieces whilst painting at the Phoenix I was nudged into having a go. Ten weeks later I can only say I'm hooked!

Jeannette Matelot Green, Thame

I was a complete beginner

...but Liam guided us through the different processes and encouraged us in such a way that I had confidence to have a go and was rather pleased with my efforts! It was all very relaxed. Liam was well organised and all the equipment and materials we needed were readily to hand. The Phoenix Studio in Towersey was a pleasant and accommodating space to work in. I look forward to the next opportunity.

I was amazed at what I went home with…

I highly recommend the Phoenix Studio. The well-equipped light studio looking onto the garden is a splendid place to work. I will definitely go again.

Creative buzz

With a good balance of personal attention and creative buzz throughout, Liam’s informal and encouraging approach was perfect for me.

A summary of comments: "Great people, learnt masses...Thank you. I have really enjoyed the course...Best IT course I've been on...I am pleased with the course and hospitality...The course has been very good...I like the opportunity to practise in-between sessions and the online support has been fabulous!"

An excellent course and highly addictive!

I started coming here 3 years ago and I've been coming ever since.

The Phoenix studio is a wonderful place, a gem set in the South Oxfordshire countryside. But it's the people who make the place. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Relaxed but serious!

Sociable, good working environment, good atmosphere, relaxed but serious!

Ken Organ

Pleasant company

Good value, different sitters each week, friendly atmosphere - what more could you ask?

Pete Hughes

Really helpful

I found the course [Promote Your Art Online] really helpful, motivating and I learnt loads. Will be putting it into practice.

James is a natural teacher

Would definitely recommend this course, a fun, creative and thoroughly enjoyable two days with some lovely people. With his friendly and supportive style, James is a natural teacher and helps you create sculpture you can be proud of.

Brian Paterson

Approachable tutors

The Promote Your Art Online course was good - approachable tutors - good follow-up - everything covered - suitably experienced people delivering information with good humour - an informal approach allowing interjections from us all. Only my own limitations restricted the pace at which I could implement what I was learning!

James’ original and innovative away of working with clay was put across with boundless patience in the most comprehensive way. Everyone in the group produced lovely objects. Marvellous!!

Valerie Powell

It’s always such fun!

James is not only very encouraging, but has a wonderful eye for anatomy, and comes up with amazing ideas for building the details of the sculptures.

Sue Fish

Thoroughly enjoyable

Would definitely recommend, a fun, creative and thoroughly enjoyable weekend with some lovely people. Look forward to my next time at Phoenix.

Brian Paterson

Just have a go!

It’s always great there, and it doesn't matter whether you are good or bad at what you are doing as everyone's pieces have validity and indeed, artistic value.

Evelyn Hillier

A pleasure

James has a talent for bringing out everyone’s creative side and encouraging them to achieve their best. As well as being pleased with my own efforts, it was a real pleasure seeing everyone else’s very varied creatures emerge.

Becky Lusby

Thoroughly enjoyed

I thoroughly enjoyed Liam's printmaking workshop. I was a complete beginner, but Liam guided us through the different processes and encouraged us in such a way that I had confidence to have a go and was rather pleased with my efforts!

Julia MacDougall

James is so inspirational and patient. He is able to rescue any potential disasters with such ease that everyone completes the weekend with amazing pieces.

Rena George

The perfect environment for creativity.

The course that I experienced has completely changed my approach to my own creativity. It's laughable now that I was so worried about my lack of artistic flair.

Alison Pink

Completely Happy

Just as I was beginning to realise how much I had neglected my 2D work by being a member of the Thursday Life Modelling Group, my wildest dreams came true-a space in the Monday Oil Painting Classes! When will the Phoenix do Face Lifts?  Then I will be completely happy!

Annie Thomas

The Phoenix Studio is fabulous - lovely surroundings, inspirational art all around, fantastically friendly, supportive atmosphere, great facilities and plenty of tea breaks and biscuits.

Becky Lusby

Focusing on portrait painting...

...and drawing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere - next best thing to sliced cheese.

Alan Kidd

Liam’s informal and encouraging approach was perfect for me was the level of personal attention allowed by the class size. He is experienced in many processes and took the time to find out what we were all interested in before the class convened.
