Piece together your creativity
Rosalind Wates is an artist inspired by the natural world, who specialises in mosaics – and loves to pass on her passion. This course is suitable for all abilities – students can be taught how to design and work on their own mosaics or improve on skills they already have.
With a broad range of tiles to use, the possibilities for creating lovely mosaics are endless. You can make something useful for the home, wonderful gifts for other people, or just something fabulous to hang on your wall!
We’ll cover basic mosaic skills and you’ll gain a thorough grounding in the medium, with a little history thrown in. The emphasis of the course is on individual creativity: with the skills you’ll learn you can really explore your artistic side: it’s fun, absorbing, and sociable!
Both beginners and experienced mosaicists are welcome.
DAY 1:
Introduction to mosaic
Learn how to cut and shape the tesserae. Design your mosaic and start construction.
DAY 2:
Finishing day
Continue to construct your mosaic and learn how to grout and finish off your mosaic.
This weekend course includes:
- Expert step by step guidance from Roz throughout the course.
- A relaxed and friendly learning atmosphere.
- One-to-one guidance for every student as and when needed.
- Cake!
Students will learn how to:
- Design and set up a mosaic.
- Cut and shape mosaic tesserae.
- Arrange and fix the tesserae.
- Gain an understanding of traditional mosaic patterns
- Grout and finish off a completed mosaic.

- Two days’ teaching (10am-4.00pm) in a fabulous purpose-built studio.

Suitable for?
Any adult or young person regardless of experience, from 16 years old upwards. Exceptions can be made where appropriate.
Pre-course prep:
- Optional: bring along any images you’ve collected for inspiration, though be prepared to be flexible when using them.
- There will be books for design inspiration available to look at on the course.
- You can bring along any mosaic projects you have underway, too.
This course is for you if:
- You want to learn new skills to take away with you.
- You want to explore the artistic side of yourself, particularly if you haven’t been creative for a while. Mosaic making is a good medium for this, and a lot of fun.
- You want to make something beautiful and useful to take away with you.
- You want to take a little time for yourself and immerse yourself in a creative environment
Beyond the Course
Having completed the course, you’ll be well set up to continue to explore mosaic making on your own or on a further course. Notes and a mosaic materials supplier’s list are provided.
