At the Phoenix Studio you’ll find a great range of art and craft courses to help you learn a new skill, develop your ideas and express your creative side. There’s a place here for the absolute beginner, aspiring genius or seasoned practitioner. Our friendly, mostly workshop-style classes are led by experienced artists who will help your creative ideas take shape. We especially like people who think they have no artistic talent, but would love to have a go!

State of the art studio facilities at the Phoenix

The light and airy purpose-built studio is an inspiring space, which overlooks the wildflower meadow. It is well equipped too, and we can provide some materials and equipment to support your endeavours (please check for particulars) including clay and glazes. There is a drying room and two kilns on site for firing your work.

Painting workshop at the Phoenix art school, Towersey

There are regular weekday classes in oil painting, ceramic life modelling and life drawing. You may prefer to learn traditional methods and trusted techniques, but there’s room for free expression and experimentation. On Mondays we open the studio to those who want to work in their own way but in a shared space.

Ceramic Animal course creates smiley happy people

At weekends you may find a mosaic being pieced together, a wishing stone in the raku kiln, or ceramic fauna evolving; our weekend workshops are very popular. Keep checking the website for updates because we are adding more courses all the time.

Play and learn - family workshops at the Phoenix

Our classes are mostly geared up for adults but we love working with children. Some courses are family friendly, and would be an ideal opportunity for a parent and child to create together. The Phoenix Studio is a great place for a kids party and we also offer private tuition for young aspiring artists.

Young painters getting into colour!

James is passionate about his work and his enthusiasm is infectious, leading to a number of great art projects with local schools. A favourite was the Food Chain Totem Pole – young artists collaborated in the creation of a marvellous artwork, and along the way learned about ecosystems and food chains. If you would like James and the Phoenix team to devise a project for your school or organisation, please email or call us to discuss ideas.

The Phoenix Studio is easy to find and accessible

The Phoenix Studio is easy to find, with plenty of parking. We’re in a tranquil haven with a wildlife garden, not far from Thame and within easy reach of Oxford, Aylesbury and Hemel Hempstead – a little over an hour from central London. The studio is wheelchair friendly and easily accessible for those with limited mobility.

A community of artist friends.

The Phoenix Studio is a special place. People come to learn a new skill or develop their practise, and then find they have become a part of a community of artist friends who share ideas and tips, or debate the latest hot topic or just gossip along with tea and cake around the big table. Come and see us – you are welcome! – and you’ll see what we mean.

Models required for portrait and life classes.

If you are uninhibited and don’t mind modelling nude for our life classes, we would like to hear from you. We offer a very appreciative working environment and we’ll pay you for your time.

If you would rather keep your clothes on, we are always looking for portrait models. We love crinkly, wrinkly, characterful and lived-in faces, but if you are young and beautiful, we’ll love you too.

Please email James (james@phoenixstudio.co.uk) to express an interest. Please send us details of your level of experience and include a photograph of yourself. Nudes are not necessary but an indication of body size is. NB we have a lot of men on the books and our students tend to want to sculpt women so if you are male model please do not be disappointed if we do not have work for you.
