Spend two days learning this multi-colour relief printing method. This course is perfect for beginners or improvers. Work from any photograph, design or sketch – designs can be easily traced if you are not confident at drawing.
This course is taught by professional printmaker, Alexandra Buckle whose scenic reduction linocuts beautifully capture the light and colour of the landscape.
Reduction linocutting is a relief printing technique which involves cutting and printing several layers of colour from the same block of lino in order to build up an image, destroying the block in the process. It is a fascinating and rewarding process which wealds surprising and delightful results.
Over the two days you will be given a series of demonstrations that show you the key stages and principles of the technique enabling you to plan and print your design with the tutors’ guidance and support every step of the way. You will be using soft cut vinyl type lino which is very easy to cut and print from and water based inks which are really easy to clean up and dry quickly.
You will leave with a small edition of multi-colour prints and a great sense of achievement!

Pre course prep
If you have signed up for the course or are considering doing so then you just need to do a little preparation beforehand. In a nutshell you need to collect reference material on which your print will be based. This could be a photograph you have taken, or a design sketch or painting that you wish to develop further. Anything will work well as a print as long as it is fairly bold and the detail is not too fiddly. If you are not confident at drawing, print something out the correct size so that you can trace, we will be working on lino which is 15x20cm.
You will be sent an automated email on booking which prompts you towards documents that help you prepare for your time here. If this does not happen then please email James before the course.

Beyond The Course
Having completed a Phoenix Studio course many of our students choose to explore the medium further. They may come on another weekend course, start coming to our Creative Monday Sessions, evening sessions or carry on independently at home. We are more than happy to help and advise you in taking those first creative steps!
ABOUT THE TUTOR

I’m really looking forward to teaching at the Phoenix Studio. I spent a lot of time in Towersey as a child, so it will feel like coming home!
